Largest Home in USA
With 135,000 square feet of living space the beautiful Biltmore House in Asheville, North Carolina is the largest home in the United States. Today Biltmore is a landmark home and estate that is open to the public and receives over 1 million visitors per year making it one of the most visited tourist attractions in the USA.
Biltmore was built from 1889 to 1895 in Chateauesque style by famed architect Richard Morris Hunt for millionaire George Washington Vanderbilt II. George was the youngest child of William Henry Vanderbilt who was the richest man in the world when he passed away in 1877. George took his inheritance and built Biltmore like his siblings had built huge mansions in Hyde Park, New York and Newport, RI. Only George wanted Biltmore to be the largest and grandest estate in the USA.
The Biltmore Estate contained over 125,000 acres of grounds that were landscaped by Frederick Law Olmstead who also designed Central Park in New York City. The house itself contains over 4 acres of living space, 250 total rooms including 34 bedrooms and 43 bathrooms, 65 fireplaces, an indoor pool, gymnasium and even a bowling alley. Such a home today would also contain its own home movie theater.
When George Washington Vanderbilt II died in 1914 his wife sold 85,000 acres from the estate to the United States Government which protected the land in Pisgah National Forest. In 1930 the Vanderbilts began to open up Biltmore to the public for tours.
In 1956 Biltmore became a full-time museum and tourist attraction.
Today the Biltmore Estate consists of over 8,000 acres including 75 acres of formal gardens, its own winery which produces award winning Biltmore Wines and the 213 room Inn on Biltmore Estate hotel.
Of course the real attraction which everyone comes to see is the beautiful landmark Biltmore House which is the largest home in the USA. Biltmore is also available to be rented out for weddings, parties and special events. Two very popular annual events at Biltmore are its Festival of Flowers in spring and its Christmas at Biltmore celebrations in late fall and early winter.
Just as George Washington Vanderbilt II wanted the beautiful landmark Biltmore is the largest and grandest home in the United States.
